The Jewish commentator Nachmanides is forced into a disputation with a Christian scholar about the validity of Judaism and Christianity. We will show this movie during the weekly Rashi class downtown Minneapolis. Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be part of the class (where we study Genesis/Bereishit through the lens of 11th c commentator Rashi), though you are welcome to stop by any time; no experience necessary.

Repentance (teshuvah) is one of Judaism’s most central and radical ideas. It invites us to engage in deep self-reflection and offers us the possibility of profound moral transformation. Prior to Yom Kippur, Professor Louis Newman will help us explore what teshuvah really entails, how we begin and how it can restore a sense of wholeness to our lives.
Louis Newman, a native of St. Paul, is the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1983, and also the author of Repentance: The Meaning and Practice of Teshuvah (Jewish Lights, 2010).
Sponsored by the St. Paul JCC, Beth Jacob Congregation, Mount Zion Temple, Temple of Aaron and the Talmud Torah of St. Paul.

Reform Judaism in Israel: Successes and Setbacks in 2010
Rabbi Spilker will present the status of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (the name of the Reform movement in Israel.) We will then discuss prospects for non-Orthodox Judaism given the events of this year. The context is, on the one hand, more and more Israelis are being drawn to Progressive Judaism and, on the other, ultraorthodox Jews are wielding greater power both socially and politically.
